Last Day Of School For AACPS Falls On June 18
The last day of school for seniors is still May 21. The adjustment allows the school system to seek a state waiver for instructional days.
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — The Anne Arundel County board of education has approved adjustments to the 2019-2020 school year calendar, setting the last day of school for all students except seniors as June 18. The last day of school for seniors is still May 21. The adjustment allows the school system to seek a state waiver of the 180-student-day requirement.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools, like school systems across the state, lost 10 days of instruction from March 16 through March 27. Though the days since have counted as instructional days, school systems must adjust for at least five of the 10 lost instructional days in order to seek a five-day waiver of the 180-student-day requirement from State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon.
To account for the five days, the board:

- converted April 28, the former day of the primary election, to an instructional day.
- converted two unneeded inclement weather days (June 15 and June 16) to instructional days.
- added June 17 and June 18 as instructional days.
AACPS Superintendent George Arlotto will now seek a five-day waiver from Salmon. In accordance with state law, he also will seek a waiver to allow AACPS students to engage in instruction on June 2, the new date of the primary election. The last day of work for teachers and other employees in bargaining units is not impacted by the waivers and will be determined in accordance with the negotiated agreements and terms of employment.
