Lightning Sparks Riva Home Fire, Golf Ball-sized Hall Falls

A home in Riva caught on fire after lightning struck in during the storms that rolled through Anne Arundel County Aug. 1.

RIVA, MD — When storms rolled through Anne Arundel County Aug. 1, they brought with them golf ball-sized hail and damaging winds. The National Weather Service received a report of hail 1.75 inches in diameter in Glen Burnie. One-inch hail was reported near Severn.

Lightning struck a home at 3026 Pike Drive in Riva, sparking a fire. When firefighters arrived at the property, they found smoke rolling out from the roof. They had the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes, the department reported. Three adults and two children have been displaced because of the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross. Officials estimate the damage to be approximately $100,000.
