Local Libraries Offer More Than Just Great Stories

Upcoming winter events are taking place at Pasadena public libraries.

“We don’t schedule too much in January because of the snow, or at least the possibility of snow,” laughed Bethany Tyler of the Mountain Road branch public library. Pasadena libraries do, however, have several winter events scheduled, before the years other happenings begin to spring into action.

“We have our Babies in Bloom program the third Wednesday of every month, including Jan. 19 and Feb. 16, starting at 10:15 a.m.,” said Tyler. “Babies up to 2 years old and their caregivers are welcome to enjoy stories, songs, and more.”

“Our adult book club is coming up on Tuesday, January 25th at 7pm. The selection of the month is ‘South of Broad’ by Pat Conroy and the event is an open book discussion group for adults,” added Tyler.

The library’s Anime and Manga Club is geared towards middle school and high school students. These open meetings are held on the last Thursday of the month, next scheduled for January 27th and February 24th from 3:00-4:30pm.

“We also have a Valentine’s Day program called “Will You Be My Valentine?” coming up on Feb. 9 at 10 a.m.,” said Tyler. “For young children ages 2-5, it will be a morning of stories, poems, songs, and the opportunity to make valentines for the ones they love.”

The Riviera Beach Branch will be hosting several winter events as well. Storytime for children ages 2-5 will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. from Jan. 18 until Feb. 8 as well as Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. from Jan. 19 until Feb. 9.

The Manga event for teenage fans of Japanese anime will be held on the third Thursday of the month from 3-5 p.m., next scheduled for Jan. 20 and Feb. 17.

An event much like that of the Mountain Rd branch, the Babies in Bloom program will be hosted on Feb. 2 at 9:45 a.m.

There will also be an after-school craft making event for children ages 4-12 on Feb. 23 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. At “Crafternoon children bring their imaginations and the library will provide all that is needed to beat the winter blahs.

For more information on these or future events, the library publishes a quarterly newsletter called “Library Happenings!” where you can keep up with events going on at your local library.
