Man Arrested For Car Theft, Possession Of Crack Cocaine And Gun

A man with a suspended license and prior convictions was arrested for stealing a car and possessing crack cocaine and a handgun.

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Annapolis police officers on foot patrol in the 700 block of Newtowne Drive June 11 spotted Corey Coates, 32, of Annapolis driving a stolen vehicle. Officers knew that the vehicle had been reported stolen to the Anne Arundel County Police and that Coates' license to drive was suspended.

Officers searched for the vehicle and located it parked in the 900 block of President Street. They tracked Coates down on foot in the 1100 block of Madison Street. As they approached Coates, he handed a bag to a person standing next to him, which officers discovered contained a loaded handgun, according to a police report.

Coates was arrested and also found to have the keys to the stolen vehicle in his pocket along with what police believed to be crack cocaine. Coates is prohibited from possessing a handgun due to a prior conviction. He was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, theft, CDS possession and six counts relating to possessing the handgun.
