PASADENA, MD — A man charged with robbing a Pasadena 7-Eleven earlier this month gave a fake identity to police when they arrested him. The man's real name is Frank William Helsel, police said Monday.

Helsel, 42, is from Pasadena. He originally told police he was 32 and had a different first and last name.

The theft happened around 1 a.m. on Aug. 2 at 7-Eleven's 8930 Fort Smallwood Road location. The male suspect entered the store wearing a black mask. It's not clear whether the mask was an identity concealer or a coronavirus preventer.

The man pressed a screwdriver against the clerk's back and demanded cash from the register, according to a police report. The cashier complied and gave the man an unknown amount of money.

Court documents charge Helsel with stealing between $100 and $1,500. The burglar fled, and police could not find him.

The suspect returned to the store on Thursday around 3:15 a.m, police say. The same clerk recognized the man and told police.

Soon after, police found the accused Helsel walking along Hog Neck Road. He tried to run away when police approached him, but he was unsuccessful.

Police arrested the fleeing Helsel and charged him with the crime. He faces six charges, including three felonies: robbery, armed robbery and first-degree assault. Helsel is also charged with giving a false statement to police.

Helsel last appeared in court for a Friday-morning bail hearing where a judge decided to hold him without bail. The court system does not yet list his trial date.

Editor's Note: Patch removed the false identity from the initial story and did not list the fake name in this article. It is not clear whether the name that Helsel gave belongs to an actual person. Patch does not want to risk mentioning a potentially-uninvolved party. Patch left a similar editor's note on the first story.
