Sewage Overflow Closes Cox Creek To Swimmers

Officials estimate 12,500 gallons of sewage overflowed, causing them to shut down access to the water.

COX CREEK, MD — Cox Creek is closed to swimmers, according to Anne Arundel County officials. The closure comes from an overflow of sewage that happened Sunday.

An estimated 12,500 gallons of sewage overflowed in the creek off Patapsco River from the Cox Creek Wastewater Reclamation Facility. The closure will be in effect through July 29, officials say.

Health officials warn against swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and other activities that could lead to direct contact with water. If you do, be sure to wash with soap and warm water, and to wash your clothes.

After rainfall of a half-inch or more, Anne Arundel County officials say, all beaches in the county are under no swimming and no direct contact advisories. The advisories last 48 hours "due to predicted elevated bacteria levels from rainwater runoff and increased health risks."
