Using the Potomac River to train for the Amazon

Anne Arundel deaf man paddle trains locally to simulate conditions for 3800 mile South America kayak trip

Paddling the Potomac to prep for the Amazon: Winding down after being on the Potomac River for a good 20-30 miles on June 26, Murdock Henderson gives a ‘thumbs up’ after a typical day of training for his July “Intaba Paddle for Deaf Education” down the Amazon. According to Henderson,“The Potomac resembles the Amazon in that it is deep in certain areas that create interesting currents that are great to train on.

”Normally, Henderson alternates paddling direction (north one day, then heading south the next), his choice dependent on wind and weather. While the Amazon River flows west to east, the frequent water shifts that result from the 200 smaller rivers flowing into the main water way, gives his Potomac north/south simulation a good preparation strategy for his 3,800-mile SOLO kayak new world record attempt.
