Pet Profile: King Charles Cavalier Spaniel

A glimpse into the breed and even a look at a local star.

At first look the King Charles cavalier cpaniel may resemble a cocker spaniel, or any other type of spaniel breed. But this breed is very different. The KCCS is the smallest of the spaniels, and the average life span is 10-14 years. This dog is one of the most popular breeds in the United Kingdom.

The different colors of this breed include:  bleheim (white and auburn), tri-colored (black, white, auburn), and the most rare is a ruby (all auburn.)  Unlike other spaniels, these dogs’ tails are left undocked.

This breed can have specific problems especially heart problems. They also are affected by ear problems, which most long eared dogs have. Some even have a problem with hip dysplasia. But with any breed, sometimes there are problems.

This breed is very affectionate, very playful and energetic dogs. This breed of dog is great with children, and they seem to get along with most other dogs. They love to run around and enjoy chasing different things. They are very obidient dogs. The King Charles is a very owner-oriented breed. They are eager to please, and because of that, they are very easy to train.

Erin Kellough is the owner of a King Charles cavalier spaniel named Lucy. Lucy is two years old and a fantastic addition to the Kellough household.  Lucy is very affectionate and loves everyone. Early in her life Lucy experienced luxating patellas, which is when a dogs knee cap dislocates from its normal location. These complications lead to a surgery that restricted her from walking for 6-12 weeks.

Lucy happens to be a local celebrity. When she was a year old, Lucy was featured on Animal Planet as a pet pinup. Her photo was from when she was 4 months old. Lucy just shows how great of a breed this dog can be.
