11 MD Companies Make 2018 List Of Best Midsize Employers: Forbes

Book publisher Penguin Random House is the best midsize employer for 2018 in America, according to Forbes’ annual rankings of best employers in the country. The shoe and clothing company New Balance, along with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, L.L. Bean and TripAdvisor all made the top 10.

Forbes’ rankings include 500 companies that have at least 1,000 employees. On the list are 11 companies that are based in Maryland. The highest ranked Maryland employer on the list is Johns Hopkins University (No. 12), which is headquartered in Baltimore.

• Nuclear Regulatory Commission, No. 29, Rockville, Maryland
• T Rowe Price, No. 40, Baltimore, Maryland
• CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, No. 288, Baltimore, Maryland
• Mercy Medical Center, No. 299, Baltimore, Maryland
• Clark Construction, No. 303, Bethesda, Maryland
• Whiting-Turner Contracting, No. 325, Baltimore, Maryland
• Royal Farms, No. 365, Baltimore, Maryland
• Westat, No. 434, Rockville, Maryland
• Choice Hotels International, No. 444, Rockville, Maryland
• Abt Associates, No. 451, Bethesda, Maryland

Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to compile the list. Statista surveyed 30,000 people, asking respondents to rate how likely they’d be to recommend their employer to others, Forbes explains. Respondents were also asked to nominate organizations outside of their own, according to Forbes.

Penguin Random House jumped 32 spots to claim the No. 1 ranking on the list. Forbes says an entrepreneurial spirit shapes the employee experience at the company, playing a big role in recruiting as well as retention.
