Lightning Sparks 3-Alarm Fire On Greenmount Avenue: Officials

Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze Tuesday night in Baltimore City during severe thunderstorms, according to authorities.

BALTIMORE MD — Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze in Baltimore City Tuesday evening after lightning struck a vacant residence on Greenmount Avenue, officials said. As the fire spread, crews reported they arrived to find heavy fire coming from several buildings.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, which started before 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, according to the Baltimore Fire Department.

Initially, the Baltimore Firefighters Union said a church had heavy fire showing in the 1000 block of Greenmount Avenue and the building was being evacuated, in a report before 6:45 p.m. Later, the Baltimore Fire Department clarified the fire was at a vacant home. Photos from the scene showed the 1300 block of Greenmount Avenue, where Chicken Castle closes out the block.

It was not the only emergency Tuesday reported in Charm City around that time.

"Our members have their hands full right now with multi[ple] fires and request[s] for services from the storm that just hit the city," the firefighters union reported before 7 p.m.
