Today's riddle: What did the boy say when his dog fell off the cliff? 🤔 (Answer below!)
Weather forecast:
1. Baltimore vows fixes after audit finds $40M in unpaid bills (wbaltv.com) — Baltimore City leaders are scrambling to fix billing and collection failures after an audit found about $40 million in unpaid bills over three years from residents and businesses. Finance officials blame past staffing shortages but say new policies, centralized processes, and stricter referrals to the Law Department are being put in place. Council President Zeke Cohen plans hearings to ensure every possible taxpayer dollar is recovered.
2. Co-creating science for climate-resilient cities: the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (medium.com) — Baltimore neighborhoods are at the center of a major research effort to tackle extreme heat, flooding, air quality, and energy burdens in a warming climate. The Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative is co-designing studies with residents, schools, churches, and city agencies, installing neighborhood weather stations, modeling flood risks, and testing home retrofit strategies that keep rowhouses safe in both winter and summer. Their findings are already shaping tools for targeting heat relief, guiding building codes, and helping communities advocate for smarter investments.
3. ‘I still have nightmares': Baltimore officials urge against dangerous ‘pool hopping' (wbal.com) — Baltimore City officials are urging residents to help stop dangerous after-hours “pool hopping” at public pools, warning that unsupervised swimming can quickly turn deadly. Their message follows a near-fatal after-hours drowning last summer that still haunts aquatics staff. Residents are being asked to intervene or call for help if they see trespassing, as city park pools expand to six days a week starting June 16.
4. Baltimore City's violent crime drop outpaces other major cities, study finds (wbal.com) — Baltimore residents are seeing a historic drop in violent crime, with homicides down more than 60% since 2022 and a 23% decrease compared with this time last year. A new National Bureau of Economic Research study credits the city’s Group Violence Reduction Strategy and collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, noting Baltimore’s homicide decline is outpacing other major U.S. cities. City leaders say the data-backed, community-focused approach could become a national model.
5. '40 rounds of gunshots': Upton fearful after boy shot on playground (wbal.com) — Neighbors in West Baltimore’s Upton area are shaken after an 11-year-old boy was shot on an elementary school playground on May 27, apparently caught in gunfire aimed at a 26-year-old man. A local youth step program canceled its season out of safety concerns, while a resident working with the city’s Group Violence Reduction Strategy says the case shows how much work remains despite declining gun violence numbers. Police are asking anyone with information to call 410-396-2422 or Metro Crime Stoppers.
