Flash Flood Warning Issued For Baltimore Metro

BREAKING: There is a flash flood warning for parts of the Baltimore metropolitan area until Sunday morning due to rapid rainfall.

BALTIMORE, MD — A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of the Baltimore metro area. The warning will last until 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly," weather officials said in the warning issued at 11:26 p.m. on Saturday.

By 12:03 a.m., authorities said that stream gauges on Sawmill Creek near Glen Burnie and on East Branch Herbert Run near Arbutus indicated flash flooding was occurring. People in those areas should move to higher ground immediately.

The following areas are included in the flash flood warning: Baltimore, Severn, Pikesville, Elkridge, Baltimore-Washington Airport, Glen Burnie, Towson, Catonsville, Woodlawn, Severna Park, Randallstown, Owings Mills, Milford Mill, Lochearn, Pasadena, Arbutus, Ferndale, Brooklyn Park, Mays Chapel and South Gate.

Weather officials said that 3 to 5 inches of rain had fallen in the area by 11:30 p.m. Saturday, with 1 to 3 inches of additional rain expected.

Drivers should take a detour if they come across roads that are flooded or are covered with water of unknown depth. Turn around; don't drown. Especially at night, drivers should exercise caution.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 22, for the Baltimore and Baltimore County shoreline, according to the National Weather Service. A coastal flood advisory is issued when winds and tides create conditions that may lead to flooding of low-lying areas along the shore.

Thames Street and the dragon boat dock by the Inner Harbor are expected to flood, with minor inundation up to 1 foot elsewhere.

Tides are expected to be about 1.5 feet above normal during high tide Sunday morning, which will be at 3:38 a.m. at Fort McHenry and 4:54 a.m. at Bowley Bar.

A flash flood watch is in effect until 2 a.m. Sunday.
