Maryland Coronavirus: 425 Deaths; 11,572 Confirmed Cases

So far 50,437 tested negative for the new coronavirus in Maryland, where more than 11,500 have tested positive and 425 have died from it.

MARYLAND โ€” In the past day, 788 cases of the new coronavirus have been confirmed in Maryland, state health officials said Friday morning. Now there are 11,572 confirmed cases statewide of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

So far 50,437 people have tested negative for the virus, according to authorities, who said 736 people have been released from isolation in Maryland. Since Thursday, 161 people have been hospitalized due to the new coronavirus, which has put 2,612 people in the hospital in Maryland since COVID-19 was first discovered in the state in early March.

The state's death toll from the virus is 425, an increase of 33 people since Thursday.

An additional 69 Marylanders are categorized as "probable deaths," since lab tests are required to verify they had the virus but their death certificates list COVID-19 as a cause of death.

To slow the transmission of the virus, face coverings will be required in retail establishments and on public transportation starting at 7 a.m. Saturday in Maryland. Face coverings are defined as items that obscure a person's nose and mouth, including scarves and bandanas. Those who are younger than 9 years old will not be required to wear them in retail environments.

Symptoms of the virus are shortness of breath, fever and cough. Those who believe they may have the coronavirus can use the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's self checker tool.

In Maryland, a doctor's order is currently required to get tested. The Maryland Department of Health has opened testing sites at these locations:

Testing capacity has increased by 5,000 percent in the past month, Gov. Larry Hogan said this week, adding Maryland plans to triple its current capacity so it can test up to 10,000 people a day.
