National Treasure Wins Preakness, Kentucky Derby Winner Mage In 3rd

BALTIMORE, MD — National Treasure galloped to victory in the 148th running of the Preakness Stakes, the second leg and Middle Jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. National Treasure defeated favorite Mage, the Kentucky Derby winner that placed third in the Preakness.

National Treasure had 4-1 odds going into the race. Blazing Sevens, which placed second, had 8-1 odds. Mage had 8-5 odds in the Preakness.

The seven-horse, $165 million Preakness race was held on the third Saturday in May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes. Post time this year was 7:01 p.m.

The next race is the Belmont Stakes on June 10.

Mage could have gone for the Triple Crown with a Preakness win after winning the Kentucky Derby. Entering Saturday, 73 of 147 favorites have won the Preakness, CBS Sports reported.

Brad Cox-trained First Mission was a scratch from the Preakness on the advice of veterinarians, taking one of the top contenders out of the race 36 hours before post time. The withdrawal came after five scratches for the Kentucky Derby and one horse who was scheduled to run being among the seven who died of various causes at Churchill Downs over a 10-day span.

Derby favorite Forte also wasn't running the Preakness after he landed on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's vet list, grounding him from racing for at least 14 days.
