📰 News we're reading

1. 12-Year-Old Dead, 3 Injured In Baltimore Shooting, 'Likely Over A Stupid Parking Spot': Police Commissioneri (patch.com) — Baltimore residents are reeling after a 12-year-old girl was fatally shot and three others wounded during an argument that police say likely started over a parking spot near Leon Day Park. City leaders, including the police commissioner and mayor, condemned the violence at the youth football homecoming and urged community members to come forward with tips to help homicide detectives.

2. Zeke Cohen, consumer advocates push back against BGE's proposed rate hike (cbsnews.com) — Baltimore residents could see their BGE electric bills rise about $8 a month if a proposed $156 million rate increase is approved, and local leaders are organizing to stop it. City Council President Zeke Cohen and consumer advocates canvassed West Baltimore, urging neighbors to sign petitions before state regulators hold hearings starting Nov. 6.

3. Baltimore City to tap Susquehanna River for drinking water starting Oct. 5 amid drought (cbsnews.com) — Starting Monday, Oct. 5, Baltimore will blend Susquehanna River water into the city's drinking supply because of ongoing drought and low reservoir levels. Officials say the water will remain safe but some residents, mainly in areas served by the Montebello plants, may notice slight changes in taste, smell, or color and are urged to continue conserving water.

4. Baltimore schools cut ties with ex-commissioner's company after FBI search (thebanner.com) — Baltimore City Public Schools has ended its contract with KEYS Development, a company owned by recently resigned school board member Mujahid Muhammad, following an FBI search of the firm's offices. Ethics officials are reviewing whether Muhammad properly disclosed his financial ties as KEYS entities received substantial school system and state funding for student services and a planned West Baltimore community project.

5. 12-year-old identified as driver of stolen car that killed Baltimore motorcyclist (cbsnews.com) — Baltimore police say a 12-year-old boy was driving a stolen Kia that fatally struck 69-year-old motorcyclist Barry Wright at Dukeland and North avenues, with a 15-year-old girl already charged with motor vehicle theft. Neighbors are shaken by a string of youth-involved stolen-car crashes and are demanding stronger action on juvenile crime as a new state law takes effect.
