Ongoing court battles over the inspector general's access to housing agency records could shape how thoroughly future cases of fraud, waste, abuse, and vulnerable families' placements are investigated and overseen.
   

2. Baltimore Back River plant odor complaints grow (wbaltv.com) — Residents near Baltimore's Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant are enduring an overwhelming stench while city and state officials work on a comprehensive odor control plan. Delegate Robert Long is pushing for immediate action, organizing a town hall, and urging neighbors to appeal property taxes as Baltimore and Baltimore County DPW coordinate with MDE and the EPA on fixes.
   

3. Join a CARTI Scholarly Writing Accountability Group By Sept. 28 (umaryland.edu) — Faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, including the School of Medicine, are invited to join a seven‑week online Scholarly Writing Accountability Group starting in October. CARTI's SWAG program offers weekly Zoom sessions to help Baltimore academics carve out dedicated writing time, build structure, and stay accountable so long-delayed manuscripts finally move forward.
   

4. Baltimore steel CEO highlights role of tariffs in manufacturing (wbaltv.com) — A Baltimore-based manufacturer, Marlin Steel, is warning that Canada's new tariffs on U.S. steel could hurt its 100% American-made products and local jobs. CEO Drew Greenblatt says his Baltimore factory relies on ethical trade partners and believes tariffs can shield U.S. manufacturers from unfair foreign competition, including past pressure from cheap Chinese imports.
   

5. Houston-bound Southwest flight from Reagan National lands at BWI after bird strike (wtop.com) — A Houston-bound Southwest flight from Reagan National made an unscheduled but safe landing at BWI in Baltimore on Tuesday after striking a bird shortly after takeoff. Passengers were transferred to another plane and continued to Houston later that afternoon, while officials noted that wildlife strikes remain a serious aviation safety concern nationwide.
