Traffic Lights Not Working Amid Power Outages in Harford County: Emergency Officials

BREAKING: Treat lights that are out as four-way stops, officials advise.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD (UPDATED at 4:30 p.m.) — Many were without power Monday in Harford County, where authorities said outages were impacting traffic.

"Due to current weather conditions, many traffic lights are not working, especially along the Route 40 corridor," Harford County Emergency Planner Linda Ploener said in a statement Monday afternoon. Highway and utility officials had been notified and were working to restore power, she said.

"Please use caution while driving today and if you come to an intersection where the lights are not working, treat the intersection as a four-way stop," Ploener said. "...where lights are down, stop before proceeding..."

Multiple traffic lights were out countywide, including the signal on US 40 at MD 7, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the region Monday calling for gusts up to 45 mph that could cause scattered power outages, downed tree limbs and fallen power lines.

There were about 260 BGE customers reporting outages in Harford County as of 4:30 p.m., according to BGE's outage map. Outages appeared to be concentrated along Hickory Avenue and Colonial Acres in Bel Air, Rocks Chrome Hill Road near Jarrettsville, Carsins Run Road by Aberdeen and off Trimble Road in Joppa.

Hundreds have already had their power restored in Harford; there were 1,400 outages reported as of 1:15 p.m. in the county. At that time, the issues were mainly in the Otter Point and Bel Air South areas, with other parts of the county such as Norrisville and Aldino also affected.
