Abingdon Man Killed in I-95 Crash Near Havre de Grace

The Maryland State Police said van hit dump truck, then highway worker.

Officials say an Abingdon man employed by the Maryland Transportation Authority died Thursday afternoon in a crash along Interstate 95 near Havre de Grace.

Michael Pearce, 59, of the 600-block of Baker Avenue in Abingdon, was a facilities maintenance technician whose crew was assigned to mow the grass off I-95 near the exit for MD 155 Thursday afternoon, according to Maryland State Police.

At approximately 1 p.m., a Ford van headed south on I-95 veered into the right shoulder and triangular area where the highway splits off into the exit, hitting a stopped dump truck and then Pearce, police reported.

It was not known why the van left the travel portion of the road, according to police, who said the incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Police said Pearce was pronounced dead at the scene. Other workers were not injured, police reported.

Lane closures were in effect on I-95 south as investigators cleared the scene. The ramp to MD 155 was closed until 5:30 p.m., by which time the Maryland Transportation Authority reported there was a 10-mile backup into Cecil County.
