Bel Air Promotes Tax-Free Shopping Week

Qualifying apparel and footwear will be tax-free in Maryland through Saturday, Aug. 17. Taxes on backpacks up to $40 are waived.

BEL AIR, MD — The last day of tax-free shopping week in Maryland will be Saturday, Aug. 17. Comptroller Peter Franchot hit Bel Air as part of his tour of businesses around the state to raise awareness about the annual affair before it began. Capping off the event will be a tax-free celebration at The Festival at Bel Air on Saturday.

During Maryland's tax-free week, clothing and shoes that cost $100 or less are exempt from sales tax. The first $40 of a backpack is also covered. The event is held annually the second Sunday in August and runs through the following Saturday until midnight.

Some of the items that are tax-free include blouses, children's costumes, diapers, ear muffs, flip-flops, graduation caps and gowns, hosiery, lingerie, jeans, pajamas, suspenders and underpants. See the full list of tax-free items or call 1-800-MD TAXES for information.

The Festival at Bel Air is hosting Today 101.9 FM on Saturday, Aug. 17. Personnel from the radio station will be outside OshKosh with free Festival tote bags and coupons for Wayback Burgers from 2 to 4 p.m. Last Sunday, Mix 106.5 FM was at The Festival as well.

The state comptroller did some of his shopping in Bel Air. He stopped at John's Men's Clothing, a relatively new business downtown; it held a grand opening in April on West Pennsylvania Avenue in Bel Air.

The men's store presents quality items in a straightforward, simple way since "for men, with too many options, they get overwhelmed," co-owner Beth Pocalyko told The Aegis.

It worked for Franchot. The comptroller purchased khaki shorts, a belt and jeans during his visit to John's in Bel Air, the newspaper reported.
