BEL AIR, MD — A 10-foot bronze mustang statue is one step closer to becoming a reality at C. Milton Wright High School, after the Harford County Board of Education unanimously consented to the project moving forward. The statue will be placed near the entrance to the school complex.

"This project idea has been discussed for years among school organizations such as Athletic Boosters, the PTSA, and the Senior Class Council," according to a project brief submitted to the school board for review. The Senior Class Council is going to cover the cost.

"The statue will be an impressive symbol of the school’s mascot and will be enjoyed by alumni and students for many years," the brief said.

After the superintendent recommended approval of the request from the CMW Senior Class Council, the board accepted the recommendation at its Monday night meeting.

The "rearing" mustang statue at C. Milton Wright will cost $16,000, according to a project brief submitted to the school board.

The CMW Senior Class Council will handle the fundraising, and high school staff members will manage the work, which will be conducted by a licensed contractor.

Personnel from the Harford County Public Schools Facilities Department and Harford County Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits will assess the statue to ensure it complies with standards and codes as required.

There was no time table for installation.

In May 2018, the CMW senior class planned to donate the statue for installation near the turf field as its senior class gift to honor Tyler Pope, in whose memory the class also established the Tyler Pope Scholarship Fund, The Aegis reported. Pope, 17, was a lacrosse player at C. Milton Wright who died in a crash on Level Road Aug. 28, 2017.
