2 Vehicles Overturn In Joppa, Drivers Hospitalized: Officials

Firefighters rescued one driver using the jaws of life on Old Joppa Road Sunday, and two people were sent to shock trauma, officials said.

JOPPA, MD — Officials said two people were hospitalized after a crash in Joppa Sunday afternoon. There were two cars involved in the collision, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.

Both vehicles contained only the driver and nobody else, officials said.

At 4 p.m., crews were dispatched to the 2000 block of Old Joppa Road and arrived within five minutes.

Both vehicles were overturned, and one person was trapped, the chief reported from the scene. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle, then rescued the victim in 15 minutes, using the jaws of life in the process.

Ambulances from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company took the drivers to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The drivers were in serious but stable condition, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.





INITIAL REPORT —Old Joppa Road is closed due to a crash Sunday afternoon, officials say. One person is trapped in a vehicle, and firefighters say they are using the jaws of life in the rescue operation.

At 4:09 p.m., the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company reported it was handling a call for a crash in the 2000 block of Old Joppa Road. Rescuers were working with a tool called the "jaws of life" used to pry vehicles open.

Officials said that a medevac was requested; however, due to weather, the helicopter was unavailable.
