Roads Closed In Harford County After Severe Thunderstorms

Road closures are in effect Thursday in Harford County after storms rolled through the area.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Several roads are closed in Harford County Thursday due to thunderstorms that hit the area.

Harford County is under a flood warning until 5 p.m. and a coastal flood advisory until 4 p.m.

Here is a list of storm-related road closures in Harford County as of 3:45 p.m.:

  • Craigs Corner Road closed from Stafford to Wilkinson Road; high water near pumping station
  • Furnace Road closed from Durham Road to North Furnace Road; trees down in wires
  • Old Robinhood Road closed from Paradise to Robinhood road; high water near Aberdeen Family Swm Center

Due to high water, US 40/Pulaski Highway was closed between Robinhood Road and Locust Lane but reopened after 2 p.m., according to the State Highway Administration.

Before noon, a water rescue was required when vehicles entered high water on US 40 near Philadelphia Road in Aberdeen, according to WBAL.

Police in Aberdeen and firefighters from Joppa-Magnolia asked people not to drive through high water.


EXPIRED: These road closures were in place Thursday morning:

  • Furnace Road is closed from Durham to North Furnace; trees down in wires
  • Greene Road is closed near the Baltimore County line; trees down in wires
  • Hess Road near Canterbury Lane; trees down in fires
  • MD 7/Philadelphia Road is closed near Bynum Run; limited passing due to flooding
  • Poole Road between Dublin Manor Road and Galaxie Drive; tree down
  • Revolution Street from Lewis Lane to South Juniata Street; flooding

Flood warnings have been posted across Maryland Thursday after heavy rainfall.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Harford and Cecil counties Thursday morning. The severe thunderstorm warning was issued around 9:30 and continues until 10:45 a.m.

Radar detected severe thunderstorms with 60 mph wind gusts on a line from Delta, Pa., before 9:30 a.m., the National Weather Service reported. The storms were moving northeast at 25 mph, officials said, and they triggered the warning.

These areas may be impacted, according to authorities: Elkton, Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Calvert, Bel Air South, Bel Air North, Riverside, North East, Rising Sun, Perryman, Charlestown, Cecilton, Blake, Bohemias Mills, West Nottingham, Bay View, Lombard, Richardsmere and Woodlawn.

After 9:45 a.m., authorities said the storms were on a line from Holtwood, Pa., to Kennedyville, Md., and were moving east at 25 mph.

These areas may be impacted, officials said: Elkton, Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Calvert, North East, Rising Sun, Perryman, Charlestown, Cecilton, Warwick, Zion, Blake, Barksdale, Bohemias Mills, West Nottingham, Octoraro, Brantwood, Fair Hill and Glen Westover.

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, storms may cause trees and large branches to fall, injuring people outside as well as damaging homes and vehicles. Roads could become blocked by fallen trees, and power outages are possible.

In warned areas, people should go inside to the lowest floor and an interior room to stay safe.

These other weather alerts have been issued for the area:

  • Due to heavy rain, a flood warning is in effect for Harford County until 2 p.m.
  • Both Harford and Cecil counties are under a flash flood watch until 2 p.m.
  • A coastal flood advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. due to the potential for tidal flooding, particularly around high tide, with up to 1 foot of inundation above ground in low-lying areas. The next high tide is at 12:09 p.m. in Havre de Grace, when tides will be 2.5 to 3 feet above normal, according to the National Weather Service.
