Harford County Delays, Closures On Jan 9 2018: UPDATE

Harford County government, some municipal offices, Harford Community College, schools have modified schedules on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — As weather officials warn people to watch for ice and sidewalks, there have been announcements of delays in Harford County. Government offices will open later than usual on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

"Patchy fog has developed in subfreezing air early this morning across portions of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area..." the National Weather Service said Tuesday morning. "Not only will this locally reduce visibility, but this will also contribute to an icy glaze on all untreated surfaces. Use extreme caution if walking or driving early this morning. Treat any wet surface as ice."

Harford County government offices will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Employees who are deemed critical should report based on their departments' policies.

Harford Community College and Towson University in Northeastern Maryland will open at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Call 443-412-2322 for more details.

Aberdeen City Hall will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The town of Bel Air government offices will also open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Essential employees must report as required.

Havre de Grace City Hall will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Liberal leave policy is in effect. Essential employees must report as required.

The forecast indicates temperatures dropping below freezing overnight before thawing on Tuesday with sunny skies and high around 40 in Harford County.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement alerting those in the Baltimore-Washington area that the recent cold snap combined with temperatures dropping overnight would result in ice on untreated roads and sidewalks through early Tuesday morning.

"Use extreme caution if walking or driving...as many spots that may appear wet will actually be icy," the weather service advised.

There was 0.03 inch of ice reported in Norrisville Monday afternoon, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service.

Schools and government offices in Harford County closed early on Monday, Jan. 8, due to the wintry mix.

The latest round of wintry weather conditions comes after the "bomb cyclone" brought a coat of snow and extended wind chills beginning late last week. As a result, ground temperatures have remained below freezing despite rising temperatures.
