Harford County is hosting free public demonstrations featuring our first responders and the vehicles, equipment, and techniques they use to rescue citizens and keep them safe. Residents of all ages are invited to Harford’s Public Safety Open House on Friday, September 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Equestrian Center, 608 N. Tollgate Road in Bel Air.

Attendees will be able to watch a Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter land and be opened for public view. First-responder vehicles will also be on-site from various other public safety agencies in Harford, including fire department tanker and rescue trucks, a swiftwater boat, and heavy equipment from the department of public works.

Fire department volunteers will hold live rescue demonstrations, including rescuing a person trapped in a vehicle and extinguishing a car fire. Police officers will demonstrate using police dogs to apprehend suspects.

The Harford County special operations team will give a rappelling demonstration, and EMS representatives will demonstrate hands-only CPR and open up an ambulance for visitors to see the modern technology onboard.

Behind-the-scenes first responders, including communications and emergency management personnel, will share their roles in public safety.

A wide variety of food trucks will be on hand, offering dinner, desserts, and dog treats. Community agencies will share information and county residents who do not already receive Harford’s emergency messages can sign up to get them via phone call, text or email.

“Harford County has so many outstanding first responders, both paid and volunteer, and we make significant investments in vehicles and equipment to help them keep our citizens safe,” County Executive Bob Cassilly said. “We encourage the public of all ages to come out to see our first responders in action, learn what they do, and get tips on what to do in case of emergency.”
