Joppa House Fire Displaced Family, Injured Woman: Officials

The fire marshal traced the origin of the fire to landscaping.

A family was displaced and a woman hospitalized as the result of a house fire in Joppa over the weekend, officials said.

Discarded smoking materials caused the fire, which was traced to landscaping near the front door, the Office of the State Fire Marshal reported.

Just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company reported that its members were dispatched to a house fire.

Fire was showing from a home in the unit block of Neptune Drive in Joppa when the crew arrived, and it took approximately 20 minutes to bring it under control, according to the fire company.

A total of 41 firefighters assisted, from Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company, White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department, according to Joppa-Magnolia.

Joppa-Magnolia reported that its members took a woman with a minor injury to Upper Chesapeake. She suffered burns to the hand, according to the fire marshal.

The last crew cleared the scene at 3:09 a.m., according to the fire company.

Harford County Disaster Assistance was assisting a family of four that was displaced, according to Joppa-Magnolia. The American Red Cross was also reportedly providing relief.

The fire marshal said the blaze was ruled accidental, and it caused $30,000 in structural damage. Approximately $5,000 worth of items inside were also damaged, the fire marshal reported.
