Motive For Edgewood Fatal Shooting Still Under Investigation

EDGEWOOD, MD ­— The motive for a weekend shooting that killed a 22-year-old Edgewood man remains under investigation amid published reports that the shooting may have been gang-related.

Christopher Smith was discovered outside the residences in the 600 block of Edgewood Road around 12:30 p.m. Saturday after being shot in the upper chest, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office reported. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview, where he was later pronounced deceased.

On Tuesday, the Baltimore Sun reported that Smith self-identified as a gang member, but it is unknown whether the fatal weekend shooting is gang-related. In an email Tuesday, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Cristie Hopkins wrote that the motive is still being investigated by detectives.

Smith’s 15-year-old brother was shot and killed on the Fourth of July approximately 2 miles from where the elder Smith was discovered Saturday, according to the Sun. The 2019 shooting, on Eloise Lane and Brookside Drive in Edgewood, was deemed gang related by authorities.

Hopkins told the newspaper that Smith was not a resident at the apartment complex was discovered Saturday and lived more than two miles away. The Sun reported Smith was armed at the time he was shot.

No suspects are in custody after a search by police officers and K-9 units did not turn anything up on Saturday. Police said there is no apparent link between Saturday’s shooting and a shooting and stabbing that took place in the same area a day before.
