New Cafe to Open in Former Bel Air Bakery Space
The bakery on Bond Street will reportedly not remain empty for long.

BEL AIR, MD — A former cake chef from Open Door Cafe is planning to share her culinary talent through a new venture called Newberry Cafe & Bakery in Bel Air, according to The Aegis.
Nichol Barbes told the newspaper that she and Jim Barbes will open their cafe at 140 North Bond Street this winter.

Now vacant, the storefront on North Bond Street housed the Bel Air Bakery from 1954 and until 2015.
The owners of the celebrated community bakery closed up shop after Christmas Eve, citing the need for family time following 60 years in business.

The bakery was well known for its doughnuts, and the Barbes family reportedly received some recipes.
Open Door Cafe, where Nichol Barbes made custom cakes, closed the year before the Bel Air Bakery.
At the time, in September 2014, the owner told Patch the economy and market were factors.
However, a study from the town of Bel Air found the area could support a dozen more restaurants, The Aegis reported.
In fact, new businesses are on the horizon.
Before Newberry Cafe & Bakery makes its entry into the market, another bakery is opening on nearby Main Street.
La Cakerie, owned by Food Network star and Bel Air alum Jason Hisley, will be up and running before the end of October.
