Scam Alert: 'Fraternal Order of Police' Calls Are Bogus

Harford County Sheriff's Office: Phone scammer is falsely claiming to be collecting money for families of fallen deputies.

BEL AIR, MD – The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a scam that citizens have reported in recent days.

Someone claiming to be representing the local Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has reportedly phoned citizens, claiming to be collecting money for the families of two deputies killed in the line of duty, according to the sheriff’s office.

However, Harford deputies are not represented by an FOP, the sheriff’s office reports.

“Please be aware, this is not a legitimate request—a scam,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Wednesday.

The union that represents deputies in Harford County is called the Harford County Deputy Sheriff’s Union, and leaders of that organization have said they would never phone people to get them to donate.
