$1.2K Grant Awarded To Montgomery County Nonprofit

One Montgomery County nonprofit received a $1,200 grant for its commitment to inspire and enrich local communities.

From Maryland Humanities: Maryland Humanities is pleased to award a total of $5,200 in mini grant funding to organizations in Maryland’s Capital Region, Southern Maryland, and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The mini grant recipients are: Friends of Cunningham Falls State Park, Friends of the St. Clements Island and Piney Point Museums, Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area, Maryland Ensemble Theatre, and The Writer’s Center. Recipients are located in Frederick, St. Mary’s, Dorchester, and Montgomery Counties.

Projects funded in this round of awards include discussions about gender to complement a stage
production of Pride and Prejudice, audio guides to enhance a history tour on the Lower Eastern Shore, and a conference about writers and fictional characters with autism.

Maryland Humanities provides mini grants (up to $1,200) and major grants (up to $10,000). Funding goes to nonprofit organizations that use the humanities (literature, philosophy, history, etc.) to inspire Marylanders to embrace lifelong learning, exchange ideas openly, and enrich their communities. Grant criteria encourage free public programming in many forms.

Maryland Humanities’ Grants Program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Maryland Historical Trust in the Maryland Department of Planning, and the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.

Friends of Cunningham Falls State Park
Maryland Iron Festival Kick-Off

Grant Award: $400

On May 17, 2019, the Friends of Cunningham Falls State Park will host the Maryland Iron Festival Kick-Off—the opening ceremony for a weekend of living history interpretation focusing on Catoctin Furnace, an historic iron-making village located just south of Thurmont.

Friends of the St. Clements Island and Piney Point Museums
Heritage Day
St. Mary’s County
Grant Award: $1,200

On June 1, 2019, St. Clement’s Island Museums Heritage Day will provide the opportunity for the public to visit the island—the site of the first landing of English settlers in Maryland in 1634—and learn about its history, culture, heritage, and ecology.

Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area
Dorchester County Audio Tours
Dorchester County
Grant Award: $1,200

To celebrate Dorchester County’s 350 th anniversary, the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area will create a series of audio guides that will be accessed via mobile devices to supplement and enhance existing self-guided walking and driving tours.

Maryland Ensemble Theatre
Pride and Prejudice and the Construction of Gender
Frederick County
Grant Award: $1,200

In May and June 2019, the Maryland Ensemble Theatre will produce four performances inviting three local public high schools to participate in pre-show lectures and post-show discussions focusing on gender construction in Pride and Prejudice.

The Writer’s Center
#OwnVoices: Autism Through a Literary Lens
Montgomery County
Grant Award: $1,200

On June 1, 2019, The Writer’s Center will convene a mini-conference addressing how autistic characters are portrayed in writing and how the language used to write about autism impacts public discourse. There will be writing workshops for autistic individuals and parents of autistic children. Autistic writers will be included in planning, teaching, and a panel discussion.
