Downed Trees Catch Fire, Prompt Outages In MoCo After Severe Storms

BETHESDA, MD — Downed trees and power outages were reported in Montgomery County over the weekend after several bands of severe storms slammed the region.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service said a tree caught fire and knocked out power for multiple residents in Bethesda due to the storms.

The incident occurred in the 6300 block of Avalon Drive, where officials said downed tree limbs damaged a pole, wires and saw a transformer blow.

NBC Washington reported that the power outage had impacted some 40 residents in the community.

Montgomery County was one of many areas included in weather-related alerts issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday. One of the major notices was a flash flood warning that ran until about 7:45 p.m.

All three major D.C. airports — BWI Marshall, Reagan National and Dulles International — encountered hourslong ground stops throughout much of the day.

At the time, officials urged drivers to be cautious as some roadways had the potential to flood.
