An officer told Bethesda Today the men had been trying to pinpoint a leak at the building, and that when "they were trying to climb out, the right side of the wall collapsed."
Authorities were first alerted to the scene on the 8100 block of Kentbury Drive, near Newdale Road, for a technical rescue around noon.
Fox 5 reported that the narrow trench was roughly 10 to 12 feet deep.
