$800K Fire Leaves Vacationing Family Without a Home

Montgomery County Fire officials say a fire caused a total of $800,000 damage to a Glen Echo house.

Glen Echo, MD — A fire at a Glen Echo home caused $800,000 damage to the structure and has displaced a family of four, authorities said.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services crews were called about 12:30 p.m. Friday to the fire in the 5400 block of Mohican Road in the Glen Echo area. Firefighters said heavy smoke and flames were seen from the back of the one-story, single-family home when they arrived.

The department's blog said firefighters were hindered by limited access and steep terrain in the rear of the house, as well as building construction that included many additions and void spaces.

Crews quickly searched the home to ensure none of the residents was still inside, then learned that the family of was out of town on vacation. A neighbor had called 911 after noticing the smoke and fire.

Firefighters rescued a large turtle that is a family pet.

More than 75 firefighters responded to the scene. One firefighter was treated for a heat-related illness.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damages were estimated to be $650,000 to the house and $150,000 to the contents.
