Barricaded Carjacker Arrested; Students Released from Potomac Schools: Reports

An armed man reportedly stole a car in Bethesda and was barricaded in a Potomac townhouse. Two schools sheltered in place in Potomac.

UPDATED at 8:55 p.m. POTOMAC, MD — Police have arrested an armed carjacking suspect who was barricaded in a Potomac townhouse for roughly five hours Tuesday, which had kept children stuck in area schools during the manhunt.

Montgomery County Police say an armed man barricaded himself in a townhouse in the 11900 block of Frost Valley Way in Potomac. The carjacking happened in the 7200 block of Honeywell Lane in Bethesda, WTOP reports. Police chased the suspect through Bethesda and into Potomac, where he left the BMW and ran into a residence, authorities say.

Residents in the neighborhood were urged to stay inside and call 911 if they see suspicious activity in area.

About 8:30 p.m., police arrested the suspect inside a townhouse on Frost Valley Way. Authorities have not released the man's name.

Students and staff at Cold Spring Elementary, 9201 Falls Chapel Way, and Wayside Elementary, 10011 Glen Road, both in Potomac, sheltered in place, WJLA reports. Students were allowed to board buses, while children who walk home waited at their school for their parents to pick them up. All students were released by 5 p.m.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., police locked down the Potomac Community Center, parks officials said. The venue reopened about two hours later and operations resumed on schedule.

The unidentified suspect was considered armed and dangerous, police said.

The incident closed Falls Road between Liberty Lane and Glen Road, say Montgomery County Police.
