The Capitol Steps Perform Benefit Show at WWHS March 8th - Get Tickets Today!

Comedy satirists The Capitol Steps bring their new show to Bethesda's Whitman High March 8th, as a fundraiser for Whitman's Post Prom.

The Capitol Steps, a group of former Hill staffers who turn the latest political fiascoes and foibles into hilarious song parodies and skits, will perform their one-of-a-kind show at Walt Whitman High School at 7:00PM on Sunday, March 8, 2015. All proceeds from the show will support the Whitman Post Prom, a safe, substance-free event that has been keeping our kids and neighborhoods safe after Prom for nearly two decades. Purchase tickets online at www.waltwhitmanpostprom.ticketleap.com or email ticket requests or questions to WWHSpostpromtickets@gmail.com.

The award-winning Capitol Steps are bipartisan equal-opportunity offenders who take on both sides of the political spectrum, and they always feature the latest headlines for the freshest, up-to-the-minute satire. With a new party in control of Congress and the 2016 Presidential elections starting in earnest, head writer Mark Eaton is looking forward to bringing a host of new songs and characters to the Whitman Auditorium. “We’ll often get an idea for a topic, write it up, and it’s in the show the next day,” said Eaton in an interview with a Village News reporter, February 11th. “Our process of writing is a smattering of everything: cast members will have an idea about something, Elaina [Newport, founding member] or myself will fire ideas back and forth, or sometimes one of us will write the whole thing ourself.” Most of their skits take the form of musical parodies, with melodies from classic rock, show tunes, and current pop hits like “All About That Bass,” and “Happy.”

They’ve performed for every President since Reagan, senators, congressmen and heads of state. When asked if they ever catch flack from the targets of their satirical skewering who might be in the audience, Eaton said “Oh no, the only times we really get complaints are from politicians who we DON’T mock. To most of Washington, to be in a Capitol Steps skit is a sign you’ve really made it.”

Besides enjoying a great show at a convenient venue (with plenty of free parking!), Whitman cluster residents who buy tickets to the Capitol Steps at Whitman will be supporting neighborhood families - those who have seniors at Whitman and those who will in the next few years. Through the creative efforts of parent, faculty and student volunteers, Post Prom’s reputation as a party not-to-be-missed makes it a nearly universal draw, free to all Whitman seniors whether they attend Prom or not, and it is credited with reducing the incidence of accidents, injuries, and other serious potential outcomes in the hours after prom to zero in the Whitman community. But is does take money to run, and proceeds from the Capitol Steps show are the single biggest source of funds.

So please purchase tickets for yourself, as gifts, or even for a Whitman teacher. Tickets available on TicketLeap (www.waltwhitmanpostprom.ticketleap.com, or from the WWHS Box Office February 23-25 6:30-8:00pm, February 26-28 5:30-7:30pm.
