Maryland reported its first three coronavirus cases on March 5. As of Tuesday morning, 44,261 people have tested negative for the disease, 2,122 have been hospitalized, and 607 have been released from isolation.
A majority of people will exhibit mild to moderate symptoms — such as fever, fatigue, and dry cough — and can recover at home, according to state health officials. Despite that, Gov. Larry Hogan is urging Marylanders to take the virus seriously.
Last month, the Republican leader issued a stay-at-home order for the state's 6 million residents. Under this order, Marylanders are prohibited from leaving home, except for essential work, such as working at a hospital or grocery store, and essential trips, such as buying food and seeking medical care.
Prince George's County continues to have the highest number of cases in the state. As of Tuesday, the county has 2,356 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the latest tally. Seventy-two people have died from the disease.
Montgomery County, the state's most populous jurisdiction, is second — with a total of 1,883 positive infections and 54 fatalities.
The county with the fewest number of confirmed cases is Garrett. The total: four infections and zero deaths.
In an effort to better understand where the virus hits hardest, the state has begun posting COVID-19 cases by ZIP code on its coronavirus page.
"We are being as proactive as anyone in the country on this so that Marylanders can better understand the spread of this deadly virus," Hogan said.
Most of Montgomery County's cases come from Silver Spring (20904), according to the state. The total stands at 154.
Based on the latest figures, most of Prince George's County's cases come from Lanham (20706). It reported 153 positive infections.
Other affected zip codes include: Silver Spring (20906, 20902) with 142 and 141 cases, respectively; Fort Washington (20744) with 135 cases; Upper Marlboro (20772, 20774) with 132 and 124 cases, respectively; District Heights (20747) with 121 cases; Clinton (20735) with 116 cases; and Hyattsville (20785) with 112 cases.
