Established in 2006, the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail is the nation's first all-water National Historic Trail. Encompassing over 3,000 miles of the Chesapeake Bay and its great rivers, the trail commemorates the exploratory 17th century voyages of the Englishman John Smith, connects people to the Bay's unique natural and cultural values, and promotes the conservation of these resources.
Learn about the history of Capt. John Smith and the Native American community that thrived in the 1600s, how the Capt. John Smith Trail is being used as a framework for land conservation in the Chesapeake, and the progress we've made in conserving these natural and cultural resources.
