Happy Birthday, B-CC!

A former Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School student and Patch writer reflects on her experiences as her alma mater turns 85.

This school year, as welcomes the incoming freshman class of 2015, it will also celebrate its 85th year.

The school first opened its doors on August 26, 1926. According to the school’s website, it began as a two-story, 14-room facility on Wilson Lane, and opened its current location on East West Highway in 1935.

Looking at the school today, it’s hard to believe that the school has been around for so long. I remember roaming its halls as a lost freshman, like it was yesterday -- and not 18 years ago.

I’m sure some if its famous alumni like actors Tommy Davidson and Daniel Stern, as well as Moise Fokou, NFL linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, have similar memories.

(A host of federal judges and former Iowa governor, Chet Culver, have also graduated from B-CC).

The school underwent a multi-million dollar facelift in 2002, according to the website, bringing with it more classrooms, a brand new multimedia center, two gymnasiums and a 900-seat auditorium, among other additions. However, it is still the same school where we stumbled through (me, literally), trying to find ourselves, avoided assemblies like the plague, and cheered on our teams on the field and on the courts.

Some of my fondest memories:

  • Typing papers on (now dated) Apple computers and storing them on black floppy disks.  Most of the students in the class of 2015 have probably never seen one, let alone heard of one.
  • Going to Shakey’s for a personal pizza for only one dollar (and pocketing the rest for shopping money).
  • Avoiding gym class.
  • Climbing three flights of stairs to get to Spanish class.
  • Graduating!

As I reflect on these memories, I know that each student will one day have his or her own set of memories of B-CC. And I hope that the school will go on to celebrate another 85 years!
