BETHESDA, MD — José Andrés, a celebrity chef from Bethesda whose nonprofit has fed millions of natural disasters victims, was featured on this week's cover of TIME magazine.

As the coronavirus pandemic intensifies, Andrés has mobilized his nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, to feed passengers and crews aboard quarantined cruise ships, turn his D.C. area restaurants into community kitchens, and donate thousands of N95 masks to frontline health care workers.

"Andrés is a lesson of leadership in crisis. In a catastrophe in which the response of the U.S. government has been slow, muddled and unsure, his kitchen models the behavior — nimble, confident, proactive — the general public needs in a crisis (and, so far, has provided it more reliably than the federal government)," TIME Senior Writer Sean Gregory wrote.
