Lucky Dogs Rescued from High-Rise Fire
Montgomery County firefighters retrieved and revived two dogs from a Silver Spring apartment fire.
Two frightened dogs were rescued by Montgomery County firefighters from a ninth-floor apartment fire Friday night in Silver Spring.
The fire late Friday night was reported at 1133 East West Hwy. Firefighters found a small kitchen fire that was being kept in check by the unit’s automatic fire sprinklers, although the apartment was filled with smoke.
Firefighter/Paramedic Katie Dennison found one of the dogs hiding in the bathroom, while Firefighter Damon Grattan and Capt. Pat Stakem found the second pooch in the bedroom.

As Stakem described the scene on the department’s blog, the second dog at first was “not really moving. After a little fresh air they were back to the happy-go-lucky pups I’m sure they normally are.”
The dogs were reunited with their owner, officials said.

“Sometimes we’re in the right place at the right time and things work out,” Stakem wrote.
