Montgomery County Coronavirus Totals: 5,384 Cases, 274 Deaths

BETHESDA, MD — Montgomery County has reported an additional 234 new coronavirus cases, Maryland health officials announced Monday, pushing the county's total number to 5,384.

The state's most populous jurisdiction also recorded six more deaths in the past day, bringing the local fatality count to 274.

Another 27 — officials suspect — had COVID-19 but died without ever being tested.

Statewide, there are now 26,408 confirmed coronavirus cases, 1,216 confirmed deaths, and 101 probable deaths.

Those numbers are expected to grow as more testing becomes available, the Maryland Health Department said.

To date, 110,587 people have tested negative for the disease in Maryland.

A majority of people will exhibit mild to moderate symptoms — such as fever, fatigue, and dry cough — and can recover at home, according to state health officials. Even so, they still say residents should take the virus seriously.

As of Monday morning, 1,649 people are currently hospitalized. Of that total, 563 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

More than 5,000 people have been hospitalized since the pandemic started, state health department data shows. And a total of 1,695 people have been released from isolation.

Compared to the state's other jurisdictions, Montgomery County has the highest number of deaths and the second highest number of confirmed cases. Prince George's County is second with 271 confirmed deaths and 7,598 positive infections.

The jurisdiction with the fewest number of confirmed cases is Garrett County. The county — which hasn't reported a single new case in several weeks — has four positive infections and zero deaths.

Maryland Coronavirus Cases By Race And Ethnicity

COVID-19 appears to be infecting and killing black people in Maryland at disproportionately higher rates.

Out of 26,408 cases, African Americans account for 34 percent of positive infections and 41 percent of confirmed deaths.

According to the latest Census data, African Americans make up 30.9 percent of the state's population. Maryland is home to more than 6,000,000 people.
