Montgomery County Parent Appointed to Governor’s School Safety Board

Lorig Charkoudian is one of four on a board that will create the Maryland Center for School Safety.

Lorig Charkoudian, a conflict resolution expert with a Ph.D in economics and whose children attend Montgomery County Public Schools, is one of four people appointed to Gov. Martin O’Malley’s newly-created Maryland Center for School Safety Governing Board.

The board will help create the Maryland Center for School Safety to “ensure a comprehensive approach to school safety,” according to a release from the governor’s office. Board members will look at best practices, training and data on school safety issues.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of these highly-skilled and talented individuals to the Maryland Center for School Safety Governing Board,” O’Malley (D) said in a statement. “I am confident that they each possess the experience and leadership necessary to ensure that every child in Maryland can learn in a safe environment and receive the quality public education they deserve.”

Charkoudian earned her Ph.D in economics from Johns Hopkins University and is co-founder and executive director of Community Mediation Maryland. Her work deals with conflict resolution, interpersonal conflict and community mediation, according to a bio provided by the governor’s office.

Other members of the board include parents from Prince George’s County and Baltimore City, and a Harford County special education teacher. State schools Superintendent Lillian Lowry will lead the board.
