Police Target Drivers Texting, Talking on Cellphones

Montgomery County Police cited dozens of drivers in Bethesda and Gaithersburg enforcement stops Wednesday morning.

BETHESDA, MD — If you sometimes sneak in a text while driving, this is the time to end that dangerous habit.

Montgomery County Police officers will enforce distracted driving-related violations throughout April, which is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

On Wednesday morning, police stepped up enforcement at locations in Bethesda and Gaithersburg. Officers issued dozens of tickets to drivers who were talking on cell phones, texting and otherwise violating traffic laws.

At River Road and Goldsboro Road in Bethesda police issued:
• 25 citations issued for driver using handheld (cellular) phone while driving
• 9 citations issued for writing, sending, or reading text message while operating vehicle in roadway
• 29 citations issued for driving vehicle off roadway while passing another vehicle
• 1 citation issued for driving in excess of reasonable and prudent speed
• 1 Safety Equipment Repair Order issued

Entrance ramp from Clopper Road onto Southbound I-270 with the assistance of Maryland State Police:
• 38 citations issued
• 20 Safety Equipment Repair Orders issued
• 2 truck inspections conducted
