'Runaway' Bus Crash Hospitalizes 1, Causes Major Damage In Bethesda

One person was hospitalized after a charter bus crashed in Bethesda, hitting multiple cars and utility poles.

BETHESDA, MD — A "runaway" charter bus left one person hospitalized over the weekend after crashing into multiple cars, as well as light and utility poles.

The incident was reported Sunday around 6 p.m. off Wisconsin Ave., between Montgomery Ave. and Battery Lane.

Pete Piringer, of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said the injured individual had suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Several others were evaluated at the scene.

Photos from the scene showed downed trees, utility and light poles, and wires. Piringer said the damages caused by the crash stretched for "several" blocks in Bethesda.

Piringer said the bus, occupied by multiple passengers at the time, crashed after experiencing a "brake malfunction."

The crash had initially caused road closures in the immediate area.

Councilmember Andrew Friedson, who represents the 1st District, said in a Facebook post that first responders were alerted to the scene after receiving calls from passersby.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
