School Supplies for Montgomery County

Here's a sample of what your child might need for the new school year.

As your children rummage through the back-to-school shopping aisle, searching for the most colorful folders and backpacks featuring their favorite superheroes, make sure they grab supplies required by Montgomery County Public Schools.

Though MCPS does not have a definitive list, several schools have compiled their own. Here is a list of recommended elementary school supplies for third graders, courtesy of Garrett Park Elementary:
  • Backpack without wheels

  • 2-inch personal binder

  • 1-inch binder with clear plastic view window

  • Notebook dividers: two packages of five

  • One package pre-sharpened No. 2 pencils

  • Eraser tops or rectangular erasers

  • Colored pencils

  • Glue sticks

  • Pencil box

  • One package of wide-ruled, loose-leaf notebook paper

  • Two composition notebooks

  • The school will supply the following, but students are welcome to have their own:

    • Scissors

    • Low-odor dry erase markers

  • Personal pencil sharpener

  • Red pen used for checking papers

  • Highlighter
