Driver Identified in Teen's Hit-And-Run Accident: Police

The 17-year-old was found by a passing police car after he was hit in Silver Spring. A Burtonsville woman has been questioned.

An insurance company led police to a Burtonsville client who was reportedly behind the wheel Monday night when an SUV hit and critically injured a Silver Spring teenager, police say.

Quasim Shinar Williams, 17, of Harlequin Terrace in Silver Spring, was crossing Route 29 (Columbia Pike) from west to east near Tech Road. A northbound vehicle on Columbia Pike struck Williams in the northbound lanes and left the scene, according to Montgomery County Police.

Two Montgomery County Police officers on patrol were northbound on Columbia Pike when they saw William lying near the road. The teen was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and remained in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon.

Just before noon Tuesday, police say an unnamed insurance company called the department to report the driver involved in the hit-and run collision was at their office. Detectives then interviewed the driver, Sandra Regina Carvalho, 53, of Ambrose Court in Burtonsville.

Because of the ongoing investigation, details provided by Carvalho to officers will not be released at this time, police said.

Carvalho told officers where to find the striking vehicle, a 2006 Honda Pilot. Officers have taken custody of the SUV and are examining it for evidence.

Investigators ask that anyone who witnessed the collision call Montgomery County Police at 301-279-8000.
