Waverly Street Gallery Presents 'Wind From the East'

Waverly Street Gallery 4600 East West Highway Bethesda, MD 20901 301 951-9441 Show runs: Jan.5 - Feb.6 Opening Reception: Friday, Jan.8, 6-9pm Gallery Hours: Tues. - Sat. 12noon to 6pm Michiyo Mizuuchi’s current paintings reflect simplicity and elegance, “wabi-sabi”, an idea that resonates with the Japanese Zen philosophy, and with color harmony representing the core elements Michiyo brings forth in her work. Michiyo’s acrylic abstracts are strongly influenced by Helen Corning of the Yellow Barn Studio and Marsha Staiger of the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. She is a member of “OutloudArtists” www.outloudartists.org. Yang-ja Lee’s pieces are strongly influenced by traditional Japanese pottery, and reflect her love of the Japanese tea culture (both everyday tea and ceremonial tea). Most of her pieces are either wood-fired or soda/gas-fired, which often adds subtle and unobstrusive beauty or “shibui” to her work. She belongs to Glen Echo Pottery. Michiyo and Yang-ja were born and grew up in Japan, came to the US decades ago and have been working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as research scientists. Even though they started art as a hobby, it has become as important for them as their day jobs. This exhibit is their second joint show. The first one was held at Orchard Gallery, Bethesda, in 2009.
