After a slow start with Bowie, after being promoted from Single-A Frederick, second baseman L.J Hoes has turned things around, and now leads the Baysox in batting average (.306) and ranks third in on-base percentage (.362).
The 21-year old, a third-round pick of the Orioles in 2008, is 23-of-50 (.460) during the last 13 games, and has scored seven runs, walked six times and also produced seven RBI during that stretch. He has hits in 12 of his last 13 starts.
Fellow infielder Buck Britton, meanwhile, has also stayed hot of late. The 25-year old Britton, whose brother, Zach, a pitcher, is in the midst of his rookie season with the Orioles, is batting .391 (8-of-23) during his last 10 starts. He was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in last night’s win against Binghamton.
Britton, who was hitting .341 with Frederick prior to being promoted, is batting .296 in 26 games with Bowie.
PELZER STRUGGLING
After serving as a starter for most of the early part of the season, right-handed pitcher Wynn Pelzer was moved back to the bullpen in early June, but has struggled since the move.
The hard-throwing Pelzer has yielded four earned runs and 13 hits in his last five appearances, spanning 9 2/3 innings, also surrendering six walks during that stretch. After starting the year 1-1, Pelzer has dropped five of his last seven decisions, now sitting at 3-6 with a 4.52 ERA in 18 appearances, including 10 starts.
Pelzer, a ninth round pick of the Padres in 2007, was acquired by the Orioles, in exchange for infielder Miguel Tejada, in July 2010.
