Baysox Notebook: Good Pitching Gives Baysox A Boost
Solid starting pitching keeps Bowie near the top in first month.

The Baysox have gotten plenty of good starting pitching during recent days, and that’s a big reason they’ve been at or near first place in the Western Division in the Class AA Eastern League
Bowie had up to a 1 ½-game lead in the division at one point this week, but the Baysox slipped back to second place after the .
The offense has struggled at times, but the Baysox have gotten consistent starting pitching in recent days, led by Wynn Pelzer (1-2, 1.44), Steve Johnson (1-1, 0.56), Zach Clark (3-1, 2.28) and Mitch Atkins (1-0, 3.97).

Clark was picked as the Eastern League’s Pitcher of the Week last week.
That solid starting pitching has kept Bowie in just about every game in the first month of the season. It’s also helped the offense, which has been inconsistent at times.

Alfredo Simon of the Orioles made one start with the Baysox, going five innings last Thursday. He gave up four runs in five innings as he’s on a rehab assignment. He threw very well in the first three innings before struggling a bit in the final two innings.
“He seemed to struggle with his command,” said Bowie manager Gary Kendall. “I don’t think he’s where he needs to be.”
LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
The Baysox went through a very long journey .
The reason—Bowie needed five hours, 27 mintues to score an 18-inning victory over Richmond. Caleb Joseph sent a 3-1 pitch far over the left-field fence to start the bottom of the 18th inning to give the Baysox the victory.
“I’ve never had a walk-off before, so it was pretty cool,” Joseph said. “There’s nothing like rounding third and seeing your teammates up there happy and excited.”
Joseph went 2-for-7 in that game, and his homer came at about 12:07 a.m. after most of the crowd had left.
CLUTCH HITTING
Most of Bowie’s offensive problems can be tied into troubles getting hits with runners in scoring position.
For example, in to Harrisburg, the Baysox went just 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Bowie has had similar problems throughout the first month of the season.
“We could’ve been better with runners in scoring position,” Kendall said. after Thursday's loss. “We had some big hits…but first and third with one out, we have to put the ball in play, and we failed to do that a couple times.”
