Bond Denied For 16-Year-Old Suspect In Senior Skip Day Shooting At Schrom Hills Park

The 16-year-old suspect in the senior skip day shooting at Schrom Hills Park has been denied bond. He is being charged as an adult.

BOWIE, MD — The 16-year-old suspect in the unofficial senior skip day shooting April 19 has been denied bond. The Bowie High School student appeared in court Tuesday for a bond hearing after the shooting at Schrom Hills Park left five teens injured. The 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy have been arrested and are being charged as adults in this case.

Around 2:30 p.m. April 19, Greenbelt Police were called to Schrom Hills Park located at 6915 Hanover Parkway to help with an unofficial senior skip day gathering of hundreds of kids. Instead, they found themselves in the midst of a shooting. While officers were walking in the park, they heard multiple gunshots ring out. They ran toward the sound and found five teenage boys who'd been shot. They range in age from 16 to 18, the police department reported. They have since been released from the hospital, according to the Greenbelt Police Department.

There were more than 500 individuals at the park. The students were from many different schools in Prince George's County, according to the Greenbelt Police Department. Senior skip day has been a tradition for area high school seniors, Patch reported previously.

During the hearing Tuesday, prosecutors revealed that when the 16-year-old was arrested, officials searched his home and found three guns, ammunition, unspecified drugs and a large amount of cash. A judge ordered that the teen be held without bond but gave him permission to be moved to a juvenile detention center, according to WJLA.

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy held a news conference afterward and called the judge's ruling the right move to keep the public safe.

“The allegations are that he and another teenager shot into a crowd of individuals,” Braveboy said. “We don’t believe at this time that any one of those individuals that were hit was a target. Again, that information will continue to be investigated so this to us looks like a random act of violence at this time.”

The 16-year-old is scheduled to appear in court again on May 15 while the 14-year-old has not yet had a court appearance.

“The message must be sent to the public that we are going to protect the residents here in Prince George’s County,” Braveboy said. “The law-abiding citizens of Prince George’s County deserve a safe community and deserve safe pars, and the actions that happened that day should never have happened. They were completely outrageous.”

Police car and bodycam footage at the moment shots rang out, students fled and police ran toward the sound of gunfire have been posted on the police department's Facebook page.
