Bowie State Opens Season with a Big Win

Bulldogs go on the road to beat Assumption, 28-7, as quarterback Budd throws for two touchdowns.

Bowie State got a 37-yard touchdown run from Andre Johnson in the first quarter and a 40-yard interception return for a score from Delano Johnson in the second quarter to highlight a 28-7 non-conference win on Saturday at Assumption in Worcester, MA.

It was the first game of the season for both teams. Bowie State was 6-4 overall last year and 6-1 in the CIAA.

Bowie State will host Benedict on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first home game this year for the Bulldogs and head coach Damon Wilson, a former Bowie State player.

In the win at Assumption, Bowie State made it 21-7 in the second quarter as Kevin James hauled in a 61-yard pass from quarterback Clifton Budd.

Budd threw his second touchdown to James Proctor, for 20 yards, to close the scoring in the third quarter.

Senior Budd of Silver Spring completed 14 of 24 passes for 177 yards and the two scores. Bowie State was held to 116 yards on the ground.

The Bowie State defense was led by Amadi Bekewele, who had 11 tackles. Kinard Kenyon had eight tackles for the Bulldogs and Delante White had seven.

Marcelus Manear, a Meade High product, had four tackles for Bowie State. Junior cornerback , a Bowie High grad, had one tackle for Bowie State.
